No hormones are created equal and life changes tend to put our hormones into a “tizz”

One might not realize the presence of some hormones that cause weight gain.

For instance, insufficient sleep is associated with higher levels of the hormone ghrelin, which increases appetite, and lower levels of the hormone leptin, which leads to feeling less full. This sets people up to gain weight.

Sleep plays an important role. Getting enough sleep night after night can not only be the catalyst for a successful weight loss journey, but it can lead to other positive health outcomes.

There are several reasons why lack of sleep may cause weight gain.  Sleep deprivation can lead to an increase in the “hunger hormone” ghrelin and a decrease in the “satiety hormone” leptin, leading to overeating, snacking and constantly feeling hungry.

Interestingly those who are sleep deprived tend to eat more calories. This coupled with hormonal changes drives people to pick options that aren’t as healthy such as high carbohydrates meals.

A common factor leading to weight gain and poor sleep habits is stress.

Cortisol is a steroid hormone that your adrenal glands, the endocrine glands on top of your kidneys, produce and release. Cortisol affects several aspects of your body.  Its main function is to help regulate your body's response to stress. An increase in cortisol levels caused by stress can increase appetite.

The adrenal glands are small glands situated on the top of our kidneys. They release the hormone Cortisol. The body primarily uses cortisol for its anti-inflammatory response.  This together with a boosted metabolism with the aid of sufficient sleep allows us to function well, lose weight, regain our thought processes and more.

However, if the Cortisol is not converted correctly in the body and we have “high cortisol levels”, we gain specifically around the belly and in addition, those who are stressed may find themselves eating at night for comfort.

High cortisol levels affect hunger hormone levels by increasing ghrelin which makes you feel hungry and decreasing leptin, which makes you feel full.

Ghrelin is a hormone released in the stomach that signals hunger in the brain. Levels are high before you eat, which is when the stomach is empty, and low after you eat. Leptin is a hormone released from fat cells. It suppresses hunger and signals fullness in the brain.

Lack of sleep may also negatively affect the sympathetic nervous system, resulting in increased levels of cortisol.

It may also suppress levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). IGF-1 which is also linked to greater fat storage as a result of inflammation and excess glucose that will turn brown fat (easily burned off) and promote the development of white fat that settles round organs.

Sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, may get worse with weight gain by the white fat settling in the neck area which impedes air intake and output causing snoring and constant waking. Unfortunately, this can lead to a cycle of poor sleep leading to weight gain and weight gain leading to poor sleep.

The long and the short of it is that hormones leptin and insulin, sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, prolactin) and growth hormone influence our appetite, metabolism (the rate at which our body burns kilojoules for energy), and body fat distribution. People who are overweight/obese have levels of these hormones that encourage an abnormal metabolism and the accumulation of body fat.

Symptoms of iodine deficiency and related thyroid disorders can include:

·          Swelling of thyroid glands in the neck

·          A visible lump (goiter) on your neck

·          Weight gain, fatigue and weakness

·          Thinning hair

·          Dry skin

·          Feeling colder than usual

·          Slowed heart rate

·          Learning and memory difficulties

·          Heavy or irregular periods

Our product with bladderwrack covers any possible iodine deficiencies by balancing the output of the thyroid gland.
